I went up to Canton on the evening of the 12th inst.

& at ten a.m. the following day I called on H. B. M's Consul

Mt Scott to whom I handed your kind letter of introduction.

He ***** Wrote me a letter to Dr Mark, the private secretary

to .E. Li Hung Chang. After seeing Dr Mark I was introduced

to H.E. Li at 3.30 p.m.

H.E. said that the Taotai Liu & Capt Lu had told

him about my being in Hongkong & having learnt that I went up

with Commander Slade to the West River he wanted to know

something of the movements of the pirates & robbers who

infest the districts bordering the river. He said he also

wished to learn something about the Triad Society, its strength

& headquarters & the Hongkong method of capturing Triad

members. He said he knew Kwang Tung was a hot-bed of the

Triad Society which has branches all over S. China. He

believes that the Ko Lo Hui of the Yangtse districts is a

similar society & in constant communication with the Triads.

"What do you think about the Triad society? he asked.

I told him that the aim of the Triad Society is to overthrow

the present dynasty. They resort to highway robbery, armed

robbery & piracy & every expedient to make law-abiding people

feel unsafe & do not stop until the harassed victims are

obliged to join their membership. It is a powerful society

in numbers & the Tai Ping Chief, Hung San Tsun, was able by the help of this society to overrun the Southern Provinces of
